*Note: Individuals may attend the one-day intensive session without registering for the full 6-month academy as well as the 2019 AAPA Annual Conference.

6-Month Program Description:

The Center for Healthcare Leadership and Management (CHLM) and Arizona State University’s College of Health Solutions is excited to offer the Leadership Academy. The Leadership Academy is a deep dive into the personal and organizational strategies and skills necessary to be an effective leader within your own organization. Key to this experience is the promotion of professional growth in a unique and individualized approach that incorporates in-person and virtual learning sessions, live webinars focused on leadership, organizational thinking, and strategic decision making.

As part of the Leadership Academy, you will be led through a personal learning experience, culminating in a leadership project you will create and design. Design and implementation of the project will be led by ASU faculty in conjunction with your personal needs. At the conclusion of the program, you will have the opportunity to present a personal leadership project to the cohort at the final in-person session at CHLM Executive Leadership Conference in Washington, DC (Nov. 2019).

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify and proactively manage the seemingly opposing forces that can create potential polarization or conflict in the workplace to become a more effective leader.
  2. Identify how stress can potentially lead to interpersonal behaviors which adversely affect the performance or reputation of people and the teams they lead at work.
  3. Pinpoint specific proactive personal leadership strategies to mitigate counterproductive tendencies under stress.
  4. Describe the attributes of an authentic leader with presence and identify how to personally embody one’s own personal leadership commitment.
  5. Clarify the importance of Emotional Intelligence as a leader and create strategies to build a higher “EQ” in order to navigate through increased uncertainty and pressure in the workplace.
  6. Design more effective work conversations which allow people to include diverse, divergent perspectives and then move into collective action forward together.
  7. Identify the potential value of leading with more vulnerability and strengthen three different types of courage through one’s own personal leadership practice.

Objectives will be achieved through group discussion, self-reflection tools and assessment and hands-on learning experiences throughout the program. The program begins at AAPA 2019 on Friday, May 17, 2019 in Denver.
